ARDMS SPI Exam Objectives

Section Weight Objectives
Perform Ultrasound Examinations 23% This topic covers patient care, sonographic ergonomic techniques, interactions of sound and matter, and reflectors to modify scanning technique. It also focuses on identifying potential bioeffects, applying beam steering concepts, applying extended field of view function, and applying 3D/4D concepts. Lastly, the topic addresses sub-topics related to contrast imaging concepts, initial patient encounter, clinical history and previous imaging studies.
Manage Ultrasound Transducers 7% Under the main topic of managing ultrasound transducers, several sub-topics are addressed, including the selection of transducers for the test, adjusting transducer frequency, applying 2D array transducer concepts, applying 3D/4D transducer concepts, and applying nonimaging transducer concepts.
Optimize Sonographic Images 34% The sub-topics of optimizing sonographic images include integrating optimization concepts for lateral, elevational, and temporal resolution, utilizing magnification techniques, and optimizing image brightness. Additional sub-topics encompass applying harmonic imaging, PRF, output power, duty factor, and dynamic range concepts. Furthermore, they involve applying spatial compounding, gray scale, edge enhancement, image depth, and M-mode concepts.
Apply Doppler Concepts 34% The main topic, Apply Doppler Concepts, encompasses several sub-topics. These include understanding wall filter and sample gate concepts, prioritizing color over gray scale, and applying principles to eliminate aliasing and identify artifacts. Additionally, it involves concepts like spectral, power, and tissue Doppler, as well as evaluating hemodynamics and performing Doppler measurements.
Provide Clinical Safety & Quality Assurance 10% The topic includes several sub-topics. These sub-topics are documenting QA checks on ultrasound machines, assessing transducer integrity, and verifying ultrasound machine integrity. Additionally, performing grayscale QA testing with tissue-mimicking phantoms and applying statistical parameters are also covered here.
